Joel Willis, Mont Sainte-Anne World cup

As some may know long time club member Joel Willis headed overseas last week with the Australian Junior Team to compete at UCI DH 5 at Mont Sainte-Anne, Quebec, Canada.

After a big crash in practice he recovered and this morning qualified in 8th place, with Aussie team mate and long time friendly rival Andrew Crimmins in 2nd

Joel first started race XC and Mini DH with the club at the Lidsdale trails back when he was 9 or 10 and had natural ability from the start combined with a great work ethic to get in and train up.

He was soon showing most of us up at club level DH and after submitting letters to MTBA to allow him to compete at state level while still under the minimum age of 13 he came to be a regular podium placer through the junior ranks, often fighting it out with Andrew for a place on the top step.

After initially missing the team last year Joel took a bit of time off to catch up on study, only to get a last minuet call up for 2 races with another rider had to with draw at the 11th hr. The spell from training and lack of preparation took its toll but it was a great learning experience that has him fit and focused this time around

You can watch the finals on Red Bull TV from 4.30am tonight. I'm not sure how deep they go into the Junior field but I'll be setting my alarm to cheer him on.

On behalf of the whole CTMBC extended family I'd like to wish Joel a great race
