Had a fabulous day and a half out...

Peter, Lincoln and myself took off from Lithgow around 12pm Sat for Parkes....

I had a motel booked, (not such a good camper, i like a nice bed, pillow and access to a nice hot shower Smiling )...

Made it to Parkes about 4ish registered at the race start so we didn't have to line up like sheep early next morning... and of to the motel... checked in, nice and neat, had everything we needed... lady owner was hilarious... my card had been recently skimmed so i couldn't give her the number (as you usually do) for incidental spendings... i should have known ther would be no minibar or movies...) and she said "well are you going to trash your room?" with a serious face... i said "um no" with a slightly quizzical face... "oh and i would prefer if you didn't take your bikes into the room too" (again serious face).... "um right..." says i... "now way" i thinks.... we've got close to $12000 in bikes on the ute... no... they're going inside alright... anyhow, she then says "you've booked for 4 blokes, here's the extra towel"... "cool" i i says to her "i'll use it to wrap around my head when i get out of the shower".... tounge in cheek... "but you've got no hair" she says seriously..... i go internally beserk and saying thanks leave to tell my funny story to the fellas....

We sat around talking for a bit and then we got hungry and popped into town for a bite...

Found a suitable pub and off we went.... not such a fabulous place for me as a vegetarian... but the nice chef made me a huge plate of pasta with grilled veges.... mmm yum just the ticket...

Was great to see so many people in town... i think half of them were in the same pub too... Parkes had some hockey grand final, rugby grand final and all of us MTBers too, it was really really busy there....

Off we went to the motel and eventually bed... I had my kit all laid out ready to go at a moment's notice.... i started to visualise the race as i drifted off......zzz

We jumped up at 5.45 and had some food... i had packed a veritable feast of organic rolled oates, gourmet meuseli and LSA... mmmm... borrowed microwave and small bowls don't mix... i was fiddling around with my unswallowable porridge, beggsy laughing, pulls out his trangia and lights up the cooker for some really creamy oates... (lucky the humourless host lady is not around)...

Beggsy comes in... "my :&*^% rear tyre is flat again" was flat twice yesterday and then again now! we decide to look carefully at it and fix it when we get there...

Off we toddle... 15 min to race start area... took Beggsy's tyre off and had a good look at it... nothing.... new tube... refit and so far so good... did a small warm up and then it was time to line up...

Beggsy and myself somehow got ourselves on the line right up the front!!! we were looking at each other thinking "what the?".... "oh well"

Then "1min" over the sound system... "30sec" "10sec" "5sec" GO!!!!!

AAAAAGGGGHHH, man was it fast.... Lo and behold there's Beggsy right up the front blasting everybody! last time i saw him before the entire universe went to dust was him in 3rd or 4th with the
champs (Brett Bellchambers was there right next to him) Holy Smokes he was flyin...

My heart rate went to the moon at about 100 metres in... wow i need to slow down.... aaagggh can't too many blokes and gals right up my clacker.... aaaaggghh....

Into the single track and i was slowly gobbled up by the crowd... out of 200 entries for the 100k i was doing fairly good... Love, Love, Love this track... flowy, scenic and FAST...

Roos everywhere... they were getting spooked from left to right, left to right until they just let fly right in front of us! I came round a tree and there was a young lady lying on the ground holding her head, prostrate on the ground.... she had a bloke with her, but she looked bad... i stopped and asked if everything was ok... they said "no probs off you go" (saw her later on and she was cool, nasty shock, hit an invisible root and went over).

Few minutes later i was really flying 25km in...(SWORKS Renegades with 32PSI) man it was fun... and all of a sudden........eeeaahhhh "man it's become REALLY hard to pedal" my legs feel dead... "flat?" nope... "brakes seized?" "i think so..." dismounted and looked scratching my head at the back wheel... "what the heck do i do now?"

My immediate reaction was: "it's the caliper, seized brakes, dust, heat, whatever"... i removed the caliper and no difference... it was the hub!...

The only way to ride the thing was to back off the quick release and limp home with a loose wheel... which was alright, but made gears go nuts and i was slowly going to wreck my bike if i wasn't real careful..... 25km to get back to transition.... I eventually limped back (stopping every 5 min to retighten the skewer), completed 50km and eventually decided that it was stupid to continue... i really didn't want to wreck my rear end....

And so my BigFoot was cut off at the knee.... Smiling

Beggsy came in and he'd had a broken chain on the first lap and a flat tyre (AGAIN) on the second lap.... but finished with a time of 4.30!!! AWESOME!!!

Lincoln (the %^$%$## legend) stopped in the transition area and i helped him filled up his bladder, grabbed a heap of gels and off he went.... he is such a fighting, dogged legend... was such an awesome sight to see him punch the air as he came through the start/finish balloon.... just over 6hrs i think it was...

my first DNF... EVER... Mechanical failure... I'm cool with it.... you can't really predict that sort of thing....

I'm definately going next year.... can't wait.... will be packing the extra bike next time Smiling
